The official podcast of Juxtaposition Global Health Magazine at the University of Toronto. With a special focus on topics that particularly impact the vulnerable and marginalized globally, Juxtapod provides a multidisciplinary forum for promoting discussion and encouraging action in global health. The first series of episodes will focus on the socio-cultural, political, economic, and legal implications of the COVID-19 pandemic across Ontario.
Episode 6: Dr. Ramsey on Implications of Neuropharmacological Research
JuxtaPod is back in 2026! In this episode, James Korini talks with Dr. Amy Ramsey, an Associate Professor in the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology, at the University of Toronto. As a researcher, Dr. Ramsey studies NMDA receptors (NMDAR) and their role in regulating the formation and maintenance of synaptic connections. In particular, Dr. Ramsey’s laboratory examines the role of NMDAR in Schizophrenia and GRIN disorder. James discusses Dr. Ramsey’s interest in NMDAR research, as well as the implications of nootropic drugs and recreational cannabis use among student populations.
Episode 5: Cancer prevention and nutrition
In this episode, James Korini discusses cancer research and preventative measures with Dr. Kenneth Yip. As a researcher at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre and a professor in the Department of Cells and Systems Biology (University of Toronto), Dr. Yip explores cancer prevention from a nutritional perspective and introduces his valuable and evidence-based website, Anticancer.ca.
Episode 4: Infection Prevention and Control
JuxtaPod is back! In this episode, James Korini talks with Benjamin Rogers, an Infection Prevention and Control Coordinator at St. Joseph’s Health Centre. Benjamin Roger’s portfolio includes patient and staff education, data analysis, quality improvement projects, and the Hand Hygiene program. He shares his insights on the continued growth of IPAC (Infection Protection and Control Canada), microbiology, and quality improvement.
Episode 3: The Dimensions of Data and COVID-19
For the first JuxtaPod episode of the New Year, Mariam talks with Dr. Laura Rosella, an epidemiologist working in population health. Dr. Rosella talks about the importance of community and discusses the tool that she and a team of researchers at developed to provide the public with a data-driven understanding of the pandemic.

Dr. Nisha Thampi, a Pediatric Infectious Diseases physician and the Medical Director of the Infection Prevention and Control Program at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO), shares her insights on schools being open amidst the pandemic, pediatric COVID-19 cases, and more.
