Scope and Audience

Juxtaposition seeks to publish articles that are unique, current, and multidisciplinary in nature. Our content challenges traditional boundaries by juxtaposing different angles on local and global health issues. We publish articles that highlight the relationships between health and disease, social inequalities, and vulnerable populations all over the world. We encourage submissions from all disciplines, from health sciences to law to economics. Through multidisciplinary collaborations, the magazine acts as a forum for sharing ideas, promoting discussions and promoting action on global health topics.

Juxtaposition is published both in print and online. Our content is publicly available and intended for those who are interested in learning about global health issues. Because it is publicly available, Juxtaposition’s articles should be comprehensive and easily understood by those who are not affiliated with the global health community.

Submission Format

Since Juxtaposition publishes articles from a wide variety of disciplines, we accept articles in any format as long as the content is related to global health. Here are some suggested writing styles based on previously published articles.

Article Submissions

  • INFORMATIVE: Informative articles are meant to disseminate knowledge about a particular global health issue. This could include the issue’s past history, current state, and future development.

  • ARGUMENTATIVE: Argumentative articles try and persuade the reader into taking a specific stance on an issue. This could include advocacy about a particular global health movement or a critical discussion about where an issue is heading.

  • OPINION: Opinion articles are about your personal thoughts on a global health topic. These articles should have an element of critical examination and analysis.

  • INTERVIEW: Interview articles are about a current leader, academic, or contributor in the global health field.

  • PROSE AND POETRY: Juxtaposition accepts creative writing submissions! If you want to submit a piece for Juxtaposition, please pitch the idea to juxtaposition.utoronto@gmail.com

Article Length

All submissions must be between 1000-1750 words.

References

Style and Language

Juxtaposition now uses the Nature referencing style. Please visit Nature’s website to familiarize yourself with these elements prior to submission. All references used in the article must be listed numerically in order of appearance in a separate section entitled “References” at the end of the article. Within the article, references (and notes) should be cited as superscripted numbers. Consider using softwares like Zotero or EndNote to format a properly referenced piece in an automated fashion. For grammar and spelling, Juxtaposition favours formats most commonly used in Canadian English. If you have any questions, please contact the Managing Editor with questions via our e-mail: juxtaposition.utoronto@gmail.com

Acceptable References

Acceptable references include both primary and secondary sources. Examples of acceptable primary sources are research papers, books, personal interviews, photographs and unpublished data. Examples of acceptable secondary sources are reputable newspapers and magazines. Credible, official and and/or academic electronic resources are welcome. Unpublished reports or papers or personal correspondence (e-mail) must be stated in the text to account for potential conflicts of interest, and also must be cited.

Acknowledging Sources and Avoiding Plagiarism

While Juxtaposition is not an academic journal and submissions are not scholarly in nature, sources and direct quotations must still be acknowledged. The long-standing and well-known approaches to avoiding plagiarism should be kept in mind. The editors reserve the right to exclude any article that includes plagiarized material.

For a refresher on how to avoid plagiarism, please read Dr. Margaret Procter’s How to Not Plagiarize.
